Our ideal Data Scientist is not just about crunching numbers; you understand how to design a new data collection pipeline and then turn that data into actionable insights that can shape the future of Magma. With you onboard, we can bring data to the forefront of our operational, marketing, and product strategies.

This role reports directly to our COO and plays a pivotal part in aligning our data analysis needs across different departments. You’ll work cross-functionally, providing valuable insights to multiple departments:

  • Commercial Team: You will collaborate with the Commercial Team to identify potential market opportunities and customer segmentation, helping to drive revenue and business development.
  • Product Team: Working closely with the Product Team, you will help refine product features and user experiences, informed by data analytics.
  • Engineering Team: Partner with engineers to build scalable data infrastructure, ensuring seamless data collection and analysis.
  • Growth Hacking: Leverage data to identify growth opportunities and support initiatives aimed at user acquisition, retention, and engagement.

What you’ll do

  • Design and implement data collection strategies aligned with business objectives.
  • Collaborate with different departments to gather data collection requirements and ensure data quality and accuracy.
  • Work with leadership and other departments to validate and define data metrics, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Create and maintain dashboards for real-time business intelligence and historical analysis.
  • Provide data-driven recommendations to support key initiatives across marketing, product, and community departments.
  • Analyze large datasets to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies.
  • Conduct hypothesis tests to validate data-driven assumptions and provide actionable insights.
  • Utilize machine learning algorithms to predict user behavior and enhance decision-making processes.

What you’ll need

  • Solid understanding of data fundamentals: data structures, data modeling, and data querying
  • Familiarity with BI dashboard tools.
  • Solid knowledge of product analytics tools such as Posthog (which we currently use) or Mixpanel (which we migrated from)
  • Proficiency in SQL for complex querying of data stores, even beyond the capabilities of product analytics tools such as Posthog or Mixpanel
  • Familiarity with programming languages for data manipulation and analysis (Typescript/Python)
  • Solid knowledge of Google Analytics
  • Proficiency in relational databases like PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases like MongoDB
  • Experience in using data visualization tools
  • Ability to work with a variety of data sources: APIs, web scraping, direct database access
  • Oversee data integrations with third-party tools in our tech stack and manage corresponding ETL processes for a comprehensive business view.
  • Strong knowledge of statistical analysis and its application in business
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Flexibility to work with team members and stakeholders in different time zones
  • Fluent English proficiency (both written and spoken)
  • Mindset of using whatever tool to get the job done, including AI chat bots

It would be great if you have

  • Experience with machine learning algorithms and predictive modeling
  • Prior experience in A/B testing and optimizing conversion rates
  • Background in customer segmentation and personalization strategies
  • Knowledge of data governance and security best practices
  • Familiarity with growth hacking principles and strategies

Bonus points for

  • Certification in relevant data analytics courses or platforms
  • Previous experience in assisting growth hacking processes from a data collection and analysis perspective

Tech stack

We primarily use MongoDB for our databases, and our current analytics tool is Posthog. You will also be exposed to other technologies and data sources, such as APIs and web scraping tools.
