Clothing tut

Clothing rendering tutorial/breakdown (how I operate personally)
@Sorrow β€’α΄—β€’ requested this and ofc I’m more than happy to explain my (weirdβ€” idkβ€”) process for rendering clothing TvT
(Used a ref of some clothing for the tut)

Now, first off. I’d just like to say that everyone is different, which means as humans, we all learn and operate in different ways. And so not every method works for every person, this is just what I’ve found works best for me. So try all kinds of things until you find the right method that works for you.

Okay, so I’d just like to say I suck at explaining things TwT and my process is really weirdβ€”

Flats -> base shadow -> darker shadows where light doesn’t hit -> direct light areas -> details to bring it all together

I usually will block in everything overall, and then after I have the concept of where the shadows are and where the light is, I’ll then make a separate layer on top (no multiply or anything on it, a normal layer) and just do details (bounce light, halftones, even darker shadows. Stuff like that)

If I’m drawing from a reference I’ll usually render one part of it to get down the colors I want to use, and then once that’s good I’ll do the rest referencing those colors that I found works.

I’m not going to explain everything in this right here since I wrote out a ton on the pageβ€” but there’s a few things I’d like to touch up on.

You can follow tutorial after tutorial, and learn how to render clothing to buildings to food. HOWEVER. It’s very important to learn your fundamentals, and to learn WHY you do the things you do. By doing that you can benefit even more from tutorials, because not only are you learning how to draw that specific thing, you’re also learning why these things do what they do, which means you can apply it to your own works when you’re not using a reference.
References. Use them. Study them. Learn from life, practice practice practice until it becomes ingrained in your brain.

And again. LEARN. YOUR. FUNDAMENTALS. DO IT 🫡 the process of learning them may be boring and you might just want to jump into drawing immediately, BUT YOUR FUTURE SELF WITH THANK YOU SO MUCH. Edges, values, perspective, deconstruction, light &shadow. YOU WILL BENEFIT SO MUCH. I PROMISE.

Moral of the story, practice is key. Keep learning, try new things, see what works for you.

(Anyways sorryβ€” I stuck at trying to explain things I tried so hopefully it makes senseβ€” the one job I could never have is a teacherβ€”)
