Don't Cry Ethereal Just Keep Your Head Up High

He found her sitting in the moonlight at the edge of the cliff, the moon’s glow reflecting off her scales. He had gone hunting just to clear his head; with all the drama back at the Castle of Night, they needed an escape. She looked over her shoulder, locking eyes with him. Her eyes were puffy as if she had been crying, and she quickly wiped them away.

“What is the matter, Ethereal?” he asked gently. She sniffled and opened her mouth to speak, but instead, it turned into a choked sob. A wave of grief and sadness washed over him—was this what empathy felt like? It was strange.

“Come here,” he said, extending one of his wings outward in an offer of comfort. She reluctantly accepted, tucking her wings in and snuggling close to him, seeking any warmth he could provide.

“I just can’t believe he’s gone…” she whispered, so softly that he could barely hear her, as if she didn’t want to admit it out loud.

“What’s done is done, love. He’s gone, and you need to understand that you can’t bring him back.” Tears streamed down her face as she began to sob, struggling to contain her emotions.

“Let it out, love. No one else will hear.” After a moment, to his surprise, he realized it was the first time he had ever truly heard her cry—hard. He wiped her salty tears away, wrapping his wings around her and holding her close, as if to shield her from all the bad things in the world that were coming for her, or even from the future itself. This was the only comfort he could offer her.
