using gray tones for skin is ok as long as it goes for ALL skin colors.
i used to use grayer tones a lot(i dont anymore) and it was consistent no matter the skin color or ethnicity of my character. it looked fine.
i dont really see a big issue with using grayer tones as long as youre not using it to spread stereotypes.
