“self-diagnosing is invalid!!!” Diagnosis is, often times, a privilege. I am not saying that it should be a privilege, everyone should have a right to their diagnosis, but in this economy, it is a privilege. Not everyone can afford diagnosis. Waitlists for diagnoses can be years long. Some people don’t live in a safe environment to get diagnosed. Many minors can’t get diagnosed because their parents don’t believe them. However, this is not in defense of those who do little to no research, and then claim to have a disorder. Many people, such as myself, have done much research, and yet are still undiagnosed. I only have an official diagnosis for my ADHD so far. I actively choose to not have my heavily suspected autism diagnosed out of fear of it giving people more leeway to be ableist towards me. There are a million reasons why an individual could be undiagnosed, and resorting to self-diagnosing or self-suspecting. Just because a handful of people fake it, doesn’t mean that everyone fakes it. Also, some “fakers” do genuinely believe they have a disorder, but are wrong (i.e. having a different disorder than they thought they did, misunderstanding symptoms/traits, etc.)
