You've been driving in your red 1940 Ford Deluxe Convertible for nearly 6 hours. A faint beat, like a pulse, echoes in your ears. It may be the car. It may be your heartbeat. You don't know where you are and have no destination planned. It doesn't matter anyway... at least you finally left. The radio switches from podcasts and talk shows to music. a very specific song. You might have heard it once, you know some of the lyrics - but it isn't familiar to you at all. it's hot in that sticky, air-too-dense kind of way, so you reach up and pull back the roof to let in a breeze. An intense, endless blue sky answers the door. Endless wheat fields stretch into eternity on either side. Power lines border one side of the road, carrying electricity to no one. Everything is still, as if the world were holding its breath. Just like you were all those years. At least you finally left.
