PAULOWNIA SHADOWS (part three)
CHAPTER 3 — The Shining Dragon Mark
At eighteen, Neko discovered the mark.
It appeared on her back like a burn — a glowing sigil shaped like a paulownia flower intertwined with a dragon. It pulsed whenever danger approached, and lately, it pulsed constantly.
Someone was hunting her.
A masked woman confronted her in the marketplace.
“You are the Kiryu heir,” the woman said. “The last one.”
Neko rolled her eyes. “If you’re here to kill me, at least buy me dinner first.”
The woman attacked.
Neko dodged with inhuman grace, tail flicking into visibility for a split second. The woman froze — shocked — and Neko used the moment to pin her.
“Talk,” she demanded.
“You were born from the paulownia tree,” the woman gasped. “A spirit given human form. The dragons chose you.”
Neko stepped back, shaken for the first time.
A spirit?
Chosen by dragons?
Born from a tree?
Her past wasn’t just unknown — it was impossible.

CHAPTER 2 — Whispers of the Fog Dragon
By sixteen, Neko had become a rumor with legs.
Some said she could see in the dark.
Some said she could hear thoughts.
Some said she was a runaway experiment.
She didn’t deny any of it.
One night, while wandering the old paulownia grove outside the city, she sensed someone watching her. A boy from her class — brave, or stupid.
“You shouldn’t be here,” she said, voice soft but edged.
“Neither should you,” he replied.
The wind shifted. Fog rolled in unnaturally fast.
A shape moved behind her — tall, serpentine, glowing faintly blue.
The boy froze.=
Neko didn’t.
“Don’t worry,” she teased, stepping between him and the creature. “It only bites when I tell it to.”
The fog dragon bowed its head to her.
The boy ran.
Neko sighed. “Humans are so dramatic.”
But even she couldn’t explain why the dragon listened to her…
or why it called her born of the paulownia.

PAULOWNIA SHADOWS (part one)
CHAPTER 1 — The Girl With the Paulownia Eyes
Neko Kiryu arrived in the city of Hoshigawa the way a stray cat slips into a warm house — quietly, curiously, and with no intention of explaining herself.
She was fourteen when she first appeared at the academy gates, cat‑like reflexes and sharper eyes than any normal girl. Her ears weren’t visible, but everyone swore they twitched beneath her hair. She flirted when she wanted something, teased when she was bored, and kept everyone at arm’s length with a smirk that said I know more than you think.
Her name was the first mystery.
“Kiryu… like the paulownia tree?” a teacher asked.
She only smiled. “Or maybe the dragon one. Depends on the day.”
No one knew where she came from.
No one knew what she was.
But everyone felt it — she wasn’t ordinary.
And neither was the shadow that followed her.
