one thing that helps me a lot and I mainly use when I'm golfing, is asking myself "How do I stay BAD at golf?" and I list out what I know I need to work on and guess what, your brain knows how to stay bad and can immediately recognize any mistake you made. I haven't tried it for art yet, but its a good tip nonetheless
I'd say that the cliche is best; practice! But don't be afraid to experiment with different tools and styles. Good luck!
