Chapter 3
Late newleaf
They padded on, finally coming to a stop on the sandy shore of the river. A long and thick log, worn flat by thousands of paws crossing over it over the moons, stretched over it. Jackalstar started to walk across the long log, with Lilyfall jumping onto it after him. Falconwing leaped up after his sister, almost falling off after flinching away from a splish in the river caused by a leaf from the large trees around them.
When all of the Heatherclan group was on the other side, they kept moving inland, heading for the two tallest, steepest hills in the Clans’ territory. The warriors and apprentices of the clans sat between the hills, while the leaders sat atop them, where they could share news.
As the cats filed in, Falconwing had trouble staying with his clan. He knew he shouldn’t talk to Poppypaw, one of his best friends. But he did anyway. “Poppypaw! How’s it been!” He chatted happily. “We can’t be only talking at gatherings, Falconwing. And it’s Poppynose now. I can’t gather up an entire moon of events in one night. We need to meet every other night instead.” Falconwing hesitated. “Isn’t that against the code?” Poppynose looked anguished. “Which is more important, Falconwing. Them…” She jerked her head towards the other cats. “...Or us?” Falconwing couldn’t believe this. Poppynose looked more terrified than ever. “Us.” He decided.
