FOR RANIA | 6/11/83-8/24/25

Rania.
August 24th,2025, your life was cut far to short by an Israeli missile.
I never got the chance to meet you, in person or online. And for that, my heart is broken.
I was hoping, praying, that I would get the privilege to meet you one day. Give you and each and every one of your family members a warm embrace, welcoming you into a new beginning here in California. But now, that dream is impossible. It was stolen, shattered like the shrapnel that took you from the world.
Your sister in law, Rolla, loved you so deeply, as she does her entire family. To her, the fact you hadn’t met in person didn’t matter, she saw the human through the screen, saw her sister in law become her sister. I wish so badly I had gotten the chance to do the same.
Your name, Rania, meaning “To gaze upon”, signifying that you were a sight to behold, someone who caught attention wherever she went, stays with me. It is seared into my mind.
I pray that you will continue to be striking. That your story, the story that you were murdered by a missile, but also that you were a woman, a wife, a mother, a sister, loved, cherished, and needed, a part of a community, will stick with people the way it will stick with me until my last breath. I pray the people who laid their gaze upon you and led you to the prophecy of your name, will keep you in their hearts as well. Both those who met you, those whose lives you made lighter, and people like me, who never got the chance.
You are more than a number. You are more than a symbol. You are more than even a name.
You are a soul.
A soul, just like everyone else on this planet. A soul that mattered, that made an impact. On me, on Rolla, on your husband, your children, and on the world. And that impact is more powerful than any impact of an Israeli missile.
I hope if you can somehow receive this message, that you hear me when I tell you that I see you. When I gaze upon your face, I see the soul shine through.
Rolla caught me in a moment of prayer as I begged for this carnage to stop. I begged and I begged. I have never felt so angry, I have never felt so devastated, I have never felt so betrayed by the world and everyone in it, for letting a precious, innocent life fall.
