I have a lot to say about hantavirus but I don't think I could fit it in one reasonably sized post. I realize a lot of people on magma are young, middle school age or freshman in highschool (not that I'm much older) so they're susceptible to believe what they see a lot of people and then repeat it, creating an echo chamber of misinformation. However, here's the reality of the situation.
In short, hantavirus is NOT going to be COVID 2.0.
Hantavirus is a known disease usually spread by rodents, outbreaks of human hantavirus HAVE HAPPENED before and death rates hardly exceed the 30s before the virus dies out, much less killing over 100 people per local outbreak. COVID was such a big deal because it was a new virus, with no treatment, and was incredibly easy to spread because of how long it could survive outside the human body. Hantavirus does NOT have the same capacity to survive in the air. It's transmitted by continued exposure to an infected person in close quarters, not by walking by someone with hantavirus on the street. While it's true there's no vaccine for it yet, symptoms can be treated and quarantining infected patients IS enough to keep others safe.
The people on that cruise are allowed to live, they are not ruining your life by existing with a virus. It's a severe virus, yes, but not a supervirus that'll wipe out millions. The 40% death rate is inflated because the sample size is so incredibly small- less than 10 suspected cases. Also, death rates of hantavirus in Africa, Europe, and Asia are much lower than in the Americas (5-10%), where the ship actually is, geographically.
There's a lot of fearmongering surrounding this issue, but please educate yourself. The people on that cruise are not billionaires, and they do have families, and I can't imagine how traumatic it must be for them to see the whole world wants them dead and is calling them selfish for not wanting to die, all while they are trying not to catch a potentially fatal virus in close contact with them. That's why it's so dangerous on the ship: because it's in CLOSE CONTACT!!
I cannot emphasize this enough: THIS IS NOT COVID!! Yes, we are all shaken up from the pandemic, but don't let that subject you to this mob mentality surrounding hantavirus. I hope the people on the ship are safe and receive the healthcare they need, because a prolonged hospital visit costs much more than 10,000$, and I hope they comply with necessary quarantine procedures considering their exposure to the virus.
