Dog drawings by real artists
There's no one right way to draw a dog. Here are 23 ways artists on Magma drew theirs, and how you can learn from them.
The realistic way
Work from a reference, a photo or your own dog, and build the coat out of many strokes and shades instead of outlines. These artists painted fur, light and the dog's own markings.
Paint the markings, then the light
The spaniel (#39) is dark brown patches on white, and the sunny side of the head gets lighter reddish-brown strokes on top. The open mouth and pink tongue make it look happy without any cartoon tricks.
White fur isn't painted white
The white shepherd (#51) is made of blue-grey, cream and pale yellow strokes, set against an almost black background so the coat reads as white. The artist's own caption: "this was my first time using gouache".
The cute and cartoon way
Simplify and exaggerate: a round head, a small body, soft shapes and flat color. The personality comes from the face and the pose.
One soft shape and a joke
The pizza dog (#49) is mostly one cream shape: two short curves for closed eyes, a big nose, and a pizza slice where the mouth would be. Two little strokes above the head add the surprise.
The bold and flat way
Pick a few flat colors, give each shape one of them, and let strong outlines and a solid background do the rest. No blending needed.
A collie in four colors
The collie (#121) uses dark brown, mid brown, tan and cream, each as a flat shape, on a plain red background. The markings alone tell you the breed.
The fantasy way
Keep what makes it read as a dog (the snout, the ears, the paws, the tail) and change the rest: its shape, what it's made of, what it could be.
Stretch the body, keep the dog
The long dog (#12) has a dog's head, shaggy black fur and paws, but its body is stretched and curled like a dragon inside a border of flowers.
The sketched way
A few lines can be enough. Quick sketches and studies are how most artists practise, and you can stop whenever the dog already looks right.
Light lines first
The Labrador (#91) is only faint lines: the head, the hanging ears, the chest and front legs. The eyes, nose and mouth are already in place, and that's most of the likeness.
Let the paper do the white
The charcoal dog (#47) uses heavy dark strokes for the black fur and leaves the paper bare for the white muzzle.
How to draw a dog: learn it with others
The fastest way to get better at dogs is to draw them next to other people. The black puppy on the tree stump on this page was drawn in an Art Jam: a shared canvas where everyone draws at the same time.

The basic shapes behind a standing dog. Once they're down, pick a way from above and make it yours.
- Circle and snoutLightly sketch a circle for the head and attach a smaller rounded box for the snout. Long for a collie or husky, short for a pug or a puppy.
- Bean for the bodyLeave a short gap for a thick neck and draw a bean shape a bit less than three heads long, chest higher than hips.
- Four legsTubes for the legs: front legs straight down from the chest, back legs bent like a backwards 'Z' at the hock. Small oval paws.
- Ears and tailThe ears choose the breed: pointy triangles, floppy teardrops or small folded flaps. Add a tail that curls up, hangs straight or wags.
- FaceEyes on the circle just above where the snout joins, a rounded nose at the tip and a mouth line curving back. An open mouth with a tongue makes a happy dog.
- Outline, fur and colorDraw one smooth outline over the shapes, erase the guides, add a few fur strokes on the chest and ears, then color. Patches and a collar add personality.

How do you draw a dog?
There's no single right way. Start with simple shapes (a circle for the head, a box for the snout, a bean for the body, tubes for the legs), then pick a style: realistic, cute, bold and flat, fantasy or a quick sketch. The easiest way to improve is to draw alongside others in a dog Art Jam and see how they do it.
How do I draw a cute dog?
Make the head big and round, keep the body small and the shapes soft, and use flat color. The pizza dog and the round pink puppy on this page are good examples.
How do you draw dog fur?
Don't outline every hair. Paint the markings first, then add short strokes that follow the direction the fur grows, in several shades. The white shepherd on this page is blue-grey, cream and pale yellow, not plain white.
