Dragon drawings by real artists
There's no one right way to draw a dragon. Nobody has seen one, so every artist makes it up. Here are 23 ways artists on Magma drew theirs, and how you can learn from them.
The painted way
Put the dragon somewhere: a sky, a pond, a night scene. These artists painted light, weather and color around it, so it feels like it could be real.
Paint it in the colors of its world
The sky dragon (#4) is painted almost only in blues and white, the same colors as the clouds and sea behind it, so it looks as if it's made of water or glass. Darker blue lines trace the edges of the body and wings.
Let the fire light the dragon
In the fire-breathing dragon (#66) the flame is the brightest thing in the picture. The claws and tail closest to it pick up its warm yellow, while the wings further away stay dark and muted.
The make-your-own way
A dragon is a mix of animals, so pick your own mix. These artists borrowed from birds, wolves and sea creatures, and worked out the details of a creature nobody has drawn before.
Start from a real animal
The flamingo dragon (#7) keeps the bird's pink color, curved black-tipped beak and feathered wings, and adds a spiky crest on the head. It's instantly a flamingo and a dragon at once.
Zoom in on the details
Next to the whole dragon, the grey dragon sheet (#15) has separate close-ups of the eye and the open jaws. Working out the parts on their own makes the full drawing easier.
Invent a species
The blue razor-winged dragon (#91) comes with a name and a little map of the coast where it lives. The artist's own caption: "a medium sized true dragon".
The cute and cartoon way
Drop the scary parts and exaggerate the rest: a big head, big eyes, a small body and simple lines. The personality comes from the face.
Cute comes from proportions
The baby dragon (#40) has a head as big as its body, one huge eye, a little blush and a tongue poking out. It's drawn with a single purple line color and a pale lavender shade.
One dragon, many faces
The page of dragon faces (#69) draws the same horned dragon shouting, laughing and face-palming, in plain line. Practising expressions like this is how a dragon gets a personality.
#93The sketched way
A few lines can be enough. Construction sketches, line art and quick studies are how most artists work out a dragon before anything else.
Circles and a line first
The two card-playing dragons (#62) are still at the construction stage: circles for the chest and hips, one flowing line for the neck and tail, and simple shapes for the heads. That's the whole pose, before any detail.
Sketch, then paint
The red dragon study (#88) shows both steps side by side: loose pencil lines working out the pose on the left, and the painted dragon on the right.
Step by step: color and shade a dragon
From our tutorial on the Magma blog: start from a dragon line art you can remix, then color and shade it with a few tools that make the job fast. The same steps work for any line art, including your own.
1Start with line art. Remix the tutorial dragon (or use your own) and color on a layer below the line art. 
2Smart paint bucket, set to fill from the layer above: fill the background first, on a layer under the line art. 
3On a new layer below that, tap the dragon once and the whole dragon fills. Then delete the background layer. 
4Add colors on a layer with a clipping mask, so nothing spills outside the lines. 
5Shadows: a clipped layer set to Multiply, painted in grey with a textured brush for the scales and a rough one for the belly. 
6Light: a clipped layer set to Overlay, painted in white where the light hits. 
7Finish: soften the fire with an ink brush and add a background.
How to draw a dragon: learn it with others

The basic shapes behind a standing dragon. Once they're down, pick a way from above and make it yours.
- A line for the poseOne long flowing curve for the neck, back and tail. An S-curve feels alive; a straight line feels stiff.
- Body shapesA big oval for the chest and a smaller one for the hips along the line, and a wedge at the end of the neck for the head.
- Head and legsA long snout, a strong jaw and a small eye under the brow. Four legs like a big lizard's, with a bent joint and three or four clawed toes.
- Wings from a bat-wing skeletonFrom the shoulders, draw an arm bone, a bend at the 'wrist' and three or four long finger bones. Join the tips with curved lines for the skin.
- Horns, spikes and tail tipHorns sweeping back from the head, spikes along the spine that shrink toward the tail, and a spade, arrow or fin at the tip.
- Scales and colorWide plates along the belly, a few U-shaped scales on the back, then erase the guides and color. A darker back and lighter belly make the body look round.

How do you draw a dragon?
There's no single right way. Start with simple shapes (a flowing line for the neck and tail, ovals for the chest and hips, a wedge for the head, bat-like wings), then pick a style: painted, your own creature design, cute or a quick sketch. The easiest way to improve is to draw alongside others in a dragon Art Jam and see how they do it.
How do I draw a cute dragon?
Make the head nearly as big as the body, give it big eyes and small horns, and keep the lines simple. The baby dragon and the doodled dragon heads on this page are good examples.
How do I design my own dragon?
Mix a dragon with a real animal you like: a bird, a wolf, an owl. Keep that animal's colors and one or two features, then add wings, horns or a spiky tail. The flamingo dragon and the owl dragon on this page were made that way.
