Flower drawings by real artists
There's no one right way to draw a flower. Here are 16 ways artists on Magma drew roses, tulips, sunflowers and more, and how you can learn from them.
The painted way
Look closely at a real flower, or a photo of one, and paint what you see: the light, the shadows between petals and the colors that aren't quite what you expect.
Paint the light, not just the flower
The tulips (#97) are small in the picture. What makes it is the shaft of sunlight across the wall and table, and the bright highlight on the orange vase.
No two petals are the same
In the sunflower (#61) every petal bends, curls or twists a little differently, and some are darker at the tips. The center is almost black, with a rough edge where the petals start.
A dark background makes flowers glow
The pink roses and pale bellflowers (#7) sit on a near-black background, so even soft pinks and greys look bright. The petals are flat patches of color with almost no outlines.
The loose and simple way
A flower doesn't need every petal. Quick studies, doodles and loose brushwork are how most artists practise, and a few strokes can say "rose" or "dandelion" on their own.
From a spiral to a rose
Next to the big red rose (#141), three small studies go from a plain spiral to a shaded rose. The big rose keeps the same spiral on top, with a few drops of water on the petals.
Line first, then color
The invented purple flower (#92) is shown twice: once as line art made of stacked round petals on a stem, then filled in with purple and orange.
The cute and cartoon way
Simplify the shapes, make the outlines bold and the colors flat, or give the flowers to a character. The charm comes from the shapes, not the detail.
Big shape, bold outline
The cartoon flower (#125) is one red star-shaped bloom with a thick black outline and four green leaves behind it. The streaky pink and blue background does the rest.

The basic shapes behind a simple flower. Once they're down, pick a way from above and make it yours.
- Center and guide circleA small circle for the center and a bigger, light circle around it. The petals reach to that line, so they stay the same length.
- Petals opposite each otherOne petal at the top, one at the bottom and one on each side first. That keeps the flower balanced.
- Fill in the gapsAdd more petals between them. Let them overlap a little and vary their shape: real petals aren't identical.
- Stem and leavesTwo long, gently curved lines for the stem, and leaves at different heights, each with a line down the middle.
- Details in the centerLittle dots or tiny circles for seeds, or a crisscross or spiral for a sunflower.
- ColorPetals a little darker near the center and lighter at the tips, and a darker green on one side of the stem and leaves for shadow.

How do you draw a flower?
There's no single right way. Start with simple shapes (a small circle for the center, petals placed opposite each other, a curved stem and a couple of leaves), then pick a style: painted, loose and simple, or cute. The easiest way to improve is to draw alongside others in a flower Art Jam and see how they do it.
How do I draw a rose?
Start with a small spiral in the center and wrap C-shaped petals around it, each a bit bigger and more open. The rose studies on this page show that spiral turning into a shaded rose.
How do I draw a realistic flower?
Draw from a real flower or a photo, tilt it instead of drawing it flat, and shade each petal darker where it meets the center. Painting the light around it helps too, like the tulips in the sunlit vase on this page.
