While character design plays an enormous part of concept art, another important component is inventing and rendering environments. 🏞
The process is entirely different from drawing portraits, designing vehicles, weapons, working on characters, or designing costumes. This significant element of art constitutes an integral part of any video game or animation project.
✅ Compelling and realistic landscapes are often used in the video game industry, where concept sketches need to be created to define the look and feel of the game’s environments.
✅ The movie industry also uses environmental artists to design new sets of landscapes that fit the universe in which the movie resides.
✅ Creating surroundings is also a primary focus of matte painting, which in itself can be considered an entirely different art form. Matted images are combined with live-action footage to create extremely well-crafted backgrounds, illusions impossible to be distinguished from reality.
The possibilities for creating different environments are endless. You can find inspiration by exploring different real-world landscapes that can be incorporated into your paintings, or… you can connect with other artists, brainstorm and generate ideas together, and design something like never before.
A phenomenal example of an environmental art collaboration is the artwork created jointly in Magma by 4 amazing artists:
If you are familiar with the work and activities of Bob Ross, you know that there is nothing more relaxing than painting a soothing landscape scene. 🧑🎨
There is something else fascinating about it: looking at drawings and watching artists at work is one of the best ways to get inspiration for your own creativity.
✨ Imagine what you and your team would be able to create!
